Moving Abroad

Moving Abroad

Should I stay or should I go?

Deciding whether to move abroad or stay is often the most challenging choice. While we might dream of a new life in another country, the thought of losing daily contact with family and friends can be daunting. The fear of the unknown can also hold us back. Once the decision to move is made, the next step is choosing a destination and gathering information on official processes, property options, costs, and schooling if children are involved. With sufficient funds and language skills, we can begin navigating the necessary legal requirements, such as obtaining IDs and other documents. Finding a job and a place to live can be the next hurdle. Even after overcoming these challenges, homesickness can set in. The first two years are particularly tough for many, and it often takes at least five years to truly settle in. The journey is filled with trials, homesickness, and missed connections, which can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression and loneliness as old ties loosen, and new ones take time to form, leaving a sense of not belonging anywhere.

How can I help you?

I can help you determine if moving abroad is the right choice for you by assessing your motivations and readiness. Should you decide to proceed, I can offer a step-by-step plan to minimise surprises. If you’ve been living abroad and are facing emotional or mental challenges, I can assist in alleviating your distress.

1. Making Decision & Finding Location

As a first step, it’s essential to determine if you truly want to leave your home country. Some people regret staying, while others regret moving abroad. Starting a new life in a foreign country isn’t for everyone. Those who successfully establish their lives abroad often have a profound motivation to overcome challenges and homesickness. Without a strong drive, it’s nearly impossible to persevere. This is the most crucial part of the decision-making process.

If you find it difficult to decide on your own and lack people around you who can provide authentic advice—beyond those who know the world only through television—reach me out. Together, we can explore the right steps for you. We will thoroughly examine your motivation, and I will introduce you to both the positive and negative aspects of moving abroad. This way, you can make an informed decision.

If you decide to move abroad, it’s important to know where to go. If you already speak a particular language, it can greatly influence your choice of destination.

2. Gathering Information

Before moving abroad, it’s essential to understand all legal requirements, including whether you need a visa or can move immediately. You should also determine what personal documents, such as an ID, are necessary. Deciding whether to live in a village, small town or large city is crucial, especially if you have children, as you’ll need to consider school options and transportation.

Conducting thorough research on properties and the process of renting or buying is vital to understanding how much money you’ll need. In colder countries, anticipate higher heating bills, while in hotter climates, air conditioning costs may be significant. Properties in regions with oceanic weather often face mould issues if there’s no insulation. Therefore, researching the best dehumidifier can help prevent illness and protect your belongings.

If you’re moving to a tropical or Mediterranean climate and fall in love with a sunlit property, ensure it has air conditioning to avoid discomfort. From personal experience, living without it can be unbearable. In Spain or Italy, be prepared for the Mediterranean lifestyle, which includes lively nights that may affect your sleep. Conversely, in Germany, maintaining quiet is crucial to avoid legal issues.

In Singapore, littering results in fines, and drug use carries severe penalties, including capital punishment.

PLEASE NOTE, GATHERING INFORMATION FROM AUTHENTIC SOURCES IS ESSENTIAL! THIS IS THE BASE OF YOUR FUTURE!

3. Handling Official Matters

At this stage, it’s crucial to determine whether you need a residence permit or visa. You might not need either, but if you do, it’s important to know the specifics. If a visa is required, what type is it? How do you obtain these documents, where can you get them, and what are the costs involved? Additionally, what are the legal requirements for renting a property? Typically, you need to open a bank account, which often requires a new ID. Where can you obtain this ID, and what is the cost?

When renting a property, how many months’ rent must you pay in advance? This can vary from 1 to 12 months. What are the agency fees? These can range from one week’s rent to six weeks’ worth. A deposit is usually required, typically equivalent to 1 or 2 months’ rent. What documents are necessary to secure a job?

In some countries, you can visit official buildings to handle these matters in person and speak with a representative. Conversely, other countries require online registration and form completion before you can receive any documents.

Do you speak the language of the country you’re moving to? If not, I strongly encourage you to learn it, as not knowing the language can make you vulnerable. Many people move abroad intending to learn the language naturally, but 99% never do. While children can learn this way, adult brains work differently. This is why I have 27 years of experience teaching the English language.

When you collected all the official documents and settled down, you may need to officially sign out of your home country…

4. Emotional & Mental Support

Imagine that you have already moved abroad. You have a lovely new home, a new workplace, and you can settle down a little bit, which means that the first 3–4 months of craziness of official work is behind you. Congratulation! Now, you start exploring and enjoying your new area. Maybe the shop assistant recognises you are already at the café on the corner. Then one of your friends has a birthday, and you can not travel home to be with them. Christmas is just in the corner, but you can’t spend it with your family. Spring, one of your friends is getting married, but you can’t celebrate with them. A family member or friend goes to the hospital for serious surgery, and you can’t be there holding their hand. I can’t describe that emotional pain when you see your loved ones via a video call, and you can not be there any time when you would like to.

You should “sell” yourself EVERY DAY, AGAIN AND AGAIN in a foreign country. You have to earn respect and trust regarding friendships and work, as well. Trust me, it is very tiring. While you are doing your best on a daily basis, you can’t recharge yourself by spending time with people who have loved you for decades and, on the top of that, a lot of people start being jealous of you and start to behave rude. You haven’t done anything bad for them, they are simply just jealous because they think that your life abroad is easy and full of bright.

Every time you visit your home, you will experience that the distance between people who you have known for a long time is getting bigger and bigger. After a while, they may don’t even greet you. Nothing is wrong with you. This is human nature. Then you travel back to your second country, and despite the fact that lovely people are around you, you feel deeply in your soul, that you don’t belong together.

These are the main reasons why people live abroad are struggling with mental and emotional problems and, after a while, they start thinking about move back home.

You don’t need to struggle alone. I know exactly how you feel. You can reach me out to release your pain…
